Pushing Past Your Own Limits

I always used to think of myself as a hopelessly romantic type of writer. Romance was my favorite genre to write in. It was my comfort zone. Lately, I’ve been trying to push my limits.

A couple of weeks back, I saw this prompt for writing a story-

“When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson
Without thinking for even a second, I made up my mind that I’ll write about this. I wanted to write something that I’ve never with before. So, I decided that the story will NOT be a romance. Instead, it will be based on siblings relationship.

To make it more different from my other stories, I decided that this story will be situated in India.

Bhaiya (Elder brother), it’s easy for you to say. You’re a man. You can do anything you want, go anywhere you like, the society’s not going to stop you. That’s not the same for me…”

Reyan interrupted her, “Now that’s just the lamest thing you’ve ever said… Since when did you start caring about the so called samaj(Society) ?” He couldn’t believe that his sister was not ready to live her dream because of the society.

“These things sound good only in speeches and debates. Right now, we’re discussing my life. So, I’d really appreciate it if you could just get done with the whole feminism thing…”

“Ahana this is once in a lifetime opportunity! And I won’t let you let go of this chance so easily.” Reyan was determined. He was not ready in any way to let his sister give up this opportunity and then regret it all her life.

“Why are you so determined…?”

“Ahana, do you know how many people wish that they could be in your place? Not everyone gets the chance to…
